Getting Business Connected Safely

High speed Internet is vital to business.  Nova Scotia is working to see high speed throughout the province by 2009.  For those beyond phone and cable Internet connections, high speed wireless is the answer.  Wireless high speed will allow dial up hopefully to be a thing of the past.

With business connecting to high speed, especially small business, comes security risks.  A wired network usually is secured quite well.  Wireless connections can be risky, if not secured, because they can be accessed by outsiders.

A wireless router must be secured with a password so that outsiders cannot access the business network.  This usually is not a problem in big business since they have dedicated people to act as IT techs.  When you are a small business, some things can get over looked.  It might be your wireless Internet connection.

So when you are setting up a wireless network to connect laptops and desktop computers, make sure you take a moment to make the wireless connection a secured connection with a password.  As you are proceeding through the initial set up, do not bypass the security; add a password.

My friend Kevin Wood at www.trurons.com says "Be sure and follow the directions with your wireless router and change the default Admin/User passwords to something secure. Quite secure is a combination of upper/lower case letters and numbers. That will protect your router from being hacked. You should also set a WEP password so that anyone with a wireless computer can not access your network. Without it anyone driving by can use your connection."

Remember that you will be held responsible for your IP address and what goes on with that address.  You need to know that an unsecured wireless connection can be a way in for people to access your network.
