Global influences. Local changes.
Nova Scotia's labour market is changing. Globalization, technology and retention of workers are all things employers must consider. Processes, standards and technologies we use in our businesses and industries are also in transition.
Today's employees require specialized knowledge and skills to respond to those changes and continue to be productive in the workplace. The success of your business, and our province's economy, depend on it.
Workplace education. Helping the workforce stay current.
The Department of Labour and Workforce Development, in partnership with business, industry, and labour organizations, manages a program called workplace education. Workplace education promotes learning at work and supports the development of a skilled and adaptable workforce.
We can help manage the changes in your workplace. A workplace education program will help your employees enhance skills that support their success on the job, at home and in the community. Each program responds to the specific needs of your workplace and your employees so that employees can apply their skills right away. Classes usually take place on-site, fully or partially during work hours.
What are essential skills?
Essential skills are those needed for work, learning, and life. They provide the foundation for learning all other skills. When essential skills are addressed, the training and learning can be more effective.
The nine essential skills:
- Reading text
- Document use
- Writing
- Numeracy
- Oral Communications
- Team work
- Critical thing/problem solving
- Basic computer use
- Continuous learning
Helping you succeed.
No matter where you are in Nova Scotia, there is a skills development coordinator in your community, ready to:
- assess your organization's learning needs
- recommend programming that will benefit your employees
- help you apply for funding to cover the cost of an instructor
- help you select the right instructor for your programs
- offer you support while your program is underway
Sharing the costs.
Each workplace education program brings together representatives from management, union, and staff to form a project team. The team initiates, coordinates, and monitors the program. They also share the costs, which may include:
- time for employees to attend programs during the work day
- provision of program space, materials/resources, study supplies, child care/transportation allowances
- contributions to the cost of instruction
What are the benefits?
Workplace education serves the interests of management, union, and the overall organization. Your workplace will benefit from:
- more confident employees
- staff with improved team skills
- stronger management/labour relations
- employees with stronger academic skills
- employees who are better prepared for training
- greater retention of staff
- positive strategies for managing change
- employees who are comfortable using technology
