How To Defrag Your Computer And Make It Faster
Is your computer running slower than usual? Have you ever performed a Disk Defragment on your computer? Have you ever heard of Disk Defragment? Then this information is for you and it will make a difference in the speed of your computer.
Over time, files become split up or fragmented. When you add more data to a file, that packet of data does not necessarily get saved in the same place on the hard drive as the original part of the file. That new section could be saved well down the road, so to speak, from the original section. This file is now fragmented.
When your computer goes looking for the file, it finds the first part and then goes looking for the other parts. While it is looking, it is not returning to you with the complete file. You wait and you wait. When it finds all the parts, it brings the file into the program and says...here it is. You are saying to yourself, this computer is getting slower. If files are fragmented, then the computer has to look harder; giving you a slow condition.
Defragmentation is the process that joins these fragmented parts of a file together and makes the computer appear faster. When a hard drive is defragmented properly, the computer returns your request quickly, so to speak.
Microsoft provides a free program on your computer that is called Disk Defragmenter. It is located in your System Tools folder. This is how you find it:
- From the Start button, click on All Programs
- then, Accessories
- then, System Tools
- and finally, Disk Defragmenter.

If you have never defragged your computer, the process may take a while. So go for a coffee, after you start the process. You should defrag your computer at least once a month. It depends on how much you do on your computer. You should also clean off temporary files from your computer before doing a defrag. Why organize garbage with the rest of your files.
I am using a program called Diskeeper 2008 to defrag my computer. I have a large hard drive and the other defrag programs take too long. Diskeeper defrags my hard drive quicker. It actually keeps an eye on my files as I work on my computer and helps me keep my computer running fast. Check the box image to the left to go to Diskeeper web site for more information.
